From 5 to 50: Finland’s Quantum Leap in Europe’s First 50-Qubit Quantum Computer

Between 2020 and 2024, Finnish researchers linked to the OpenSuperQPlus consortium have achieved a major breakthrough in quantum computing by developing Europe’s first 50-qubit quantum computer. In a collaborative effort between VTT and IQM – both key partners in our project – the endeavour began with a 5-qubit prototype, laying the groundwork for scalable quantum technology. Over the four-year period, the system had been progressively enhanced through planned development phases, ultimately reaching 50 qubits. This phased approach not only demonstrates Finland’s growing expertise in quantum engineering and cryogenic technologies but also strengthens the know-how within the OpenSuperQPlus consortium and the broader European quantum research landscape by providing a state-of-the-art resource for both academic and industrial applications.
